Improving the birthing environment at York Hospital's Labour Ward
19 NOVEMBER 2024
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the incredible efforts of Labour Ward Midwife Nicola Jones, York Hospital’s birthing rooms are now equipped to offer a more calming, comforting environment for women and their families.
Nicola took on the Great North Swim, a one-mile challenge in Lake Windermere, to raise funds to enhance the Labour Ward experience. Her dedication has resulted in the purchase of items including projector lights, flameless candles, and aromatherapy diffusers—all of which play a role in creating a tranquil setting for on the ward.
The new additions will allow families to personalise their birth space with gentle lighting, scents, and sounds, creating an environment proven to support relaxation and reduce the need for medical intervention.
Nicola said “Relaxing scents, calming lights, and music can make a world of difference, helping families feel calm and safe during labour. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported my fundraising, as well as my core team for their help in selecting the perfect items. Together, we’re creating an environment that feels special, comfortable, and supportive.”
Thank you to Nicola for her hard work and dedication in making this vision a reality. We also extend our gratitude to the core Labour Ward team, who spent time researching and selecting these items to build each room's relaxation box and ensure a positive experience for all families. It’s through teamwork and community support that we can continue to provide such meaningful improvements to patient care at York Hospital.
