AccessAble App helps patients with disabilities thanks to charity funds
29 JULY 2024
The AccessAble guides app takes away the worry about getting around the hospital for people with disabilities and others who may need to plan their visits in advance.
AccessAble is designed to provide practical information about facilities available and the access routes into buildings and is free for patients and visitors to use, thanks to funding from York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity.
Thanks to your donations, the charity has helped launch AccessAble accessibility guides across our hospital sites – York, Scarborough, Bridlington, Selby and Malton.
Accessible guides can be found at the AccessAble website and app which provides guides and information for patients, visitors, and staff with disabilities.

Although developed for people with disabilities and carers to use, the access guides can be very useful to anyone visiting our hospitals, reducing anxiety associated with visiting new buildings and unfamiliar places.
Trust Accessibility Adviser, Dave Biggins, said the app had proved to be a great asset for patients as well as staff, as geographically the Trust covers one of the largest areas of the country and patients need to go to different sites for a range of appointments.
“The app helps to reduce some of the anxiety associated for anyone who is unfamiliar with our hospital sites,” he said, “patients, visitors and staff can trust its accurate up-to-date information about facilities at a touch of a button. These fantastic guides give people with disabilities the confidence to visit and use our services and I would like to thank for the charity for making it accessible for us all.”
The app, which is available for thousands of venues across the UK, gives detailed information on accessible features such as car parking arrangements, how to access wards or departments, accessible toilets, hearing loops and other facilities for a range of people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, and other users.
Krishna De, Head of Patient Experience and Involvement commented: “AccessAble is an invaluable resource to help patients, carers and family members plan their visit to one of our hospitals.
“Coming to hospital is a stressful experience and thanks to York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity and their generous donation, we are able to help people plan for their visit from providing details to assist them with planning their journey, parking facilities through to the amenities that we provide.”
