Association of Breast Surgery Conference 2026

Thanks to funding, Jules Spencer, Professional Lead for Advanced Practice, Gemma Barlow, Surgical Care Practitioner together with other members of the Breast Team, were able to attend the Association of Breast Surgery Conference in Glasgow.

The conference provided a valuable opportunity for the team to learn about emerging treatments, innovative technologies, and the latest developments in breast cancer care. It also enabled staff to network with colleagues from hospitals across the UK, sharing experiences, discussing clinical trials, and learning from others’ examples of best practice.

One of the most impactful sessions featured a male breast cancer patient who shared his personal experience of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

Jules said:

"A real highlight was having the opportunity to meet and hear a patient's experience from a male speaker who was diagnosed with breast cancer. He talked about the treatment he underwent, as well as the emotional and physical impact this had on himself and his family. Breast cancer is mostly associated with women, however, around 420 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. While this represents only around 1% of cases, it is a reminder that breast cancer can affect anyone."

In addition to the clinical learning, the event gave team members valuable time together away from the demands of a busy healthcare environment. Strengthening relationships and understanding within the team helps support collaboration and benefits patient care.

Jules added:

"It was wonderful that I could attend the conference with colleagues. Being able to spend time with the team outside of a clinical setting really helped us get to know one another on a greater level and connect outside of our usual busy workdays. Without charity funding, we would not be able to attend conferences. The whole team really values these opportunities, which would not otherwise be possible."
