Fifty baby room thermometers
5 AUGUST 2026

Jill Robertson, Community Midwife for Equitable Health, works with families and babies both in York and Selby hospitals as well as in the community to support safer sleep education.
Jill asked the charity to help purchase 50 LED room thermometers, which will be given to families so they can monitor both the baby’s temperature and the room temperature. These thermometers are placed beside the baby’s bed to ensure the room stays at a safe, healthy temperature throughout the night.
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) usually occurs during the night. Whilst a definitive cause has not been confirmed one of the high-risk factors has been identified as overheating at night.
Jill said:
“For more than 30 years, safe sleep guidance has been shared with families across the UK, contributing to a significant reduction in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). However, through my work with migrant communities, I have seen how cultural differences, limited public health messaging in some countries, and misconceptions about the UK climate can lead families to overwrap babies, with overheating recognised as a risk factor for SIDS.
“Providing families with simple but effective tools, such as room thermometers, along with resources in their first language, can make a real difference. These visual aids help reassure parents that their baby’s sleeping environment is at a safe temperature while reinforcing vital safe sleep messages.
“Thanks to the generous support of the York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity, we have been able to purchase 50 room thermometers from The Lullaby Trust. Fifty families now have practical support to help reduce the risk of SIDS and create a safer sleeping environment for their babies.”
