Four new nebulisers for Head and Neck patients

Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the Head and Neck Department at York Hospital has been able to expand its supply of nebulisers for patient use. Following the success of previously funded equipment, the charity has recently provided an additional four nebulisers to meet growing demand.
Patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancers often experience challenging side effects. These can include excessive production of mucus and bile, which can be difficult to clear, as well as persistent dry mouth, sometimes lasting long after treatment has finished.
To help manage these symptoms, the department offers nebulisers on a short-term loan basis. Each patient can use a nebuliser for four weeks, allowing them to experience its benefits before deciding whether to invest in their own.
Caroline Abernethy, Macmillan Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist (Team Leader), explains:
“We advise our patients of the most common side effects of radiotherapy. Increased mucus and bile can be very uncomfortable and difficult to clear, and dry mouth can persist even after a drink, sometimes for life if the glands are affected.
The nebulisers provide much needed relief, which is why we recommend patients purchase their own if they can.”
The feedback from patients has been overwhelmingly positive. Many report that nebulisers offer significant relief, helping them to better manage symptoms and improve their day-to-day comfort during and after treatment.
“Patients are grateful to be able to loan the nebuliser, we have been told how helpful they are and how much comfort they provide,” Caroline adds. “If patients have a good experience, we encourage them to purchase their own, as they now know what to expect.”
