Ultrasound Scanner, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, Scarborough
20 AUGUST 2025

The EPAU (Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit) at Scarborough Hospital currently runs Monday to Friday, 52 weeks of the year. Due the former process all patients scan requests to manage early pregnancy diagnostics were sent to Radiology.
Thanks to generous donations it has been possible to purchase a scan machine. This will allow the team on EPAU to offer a one stop service where the patient would receive their consultation, diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan all in one place.
A portable ultrasound would ease the radiology team’s workload, enhance patient care, and ensure the timely delivery of critical support for women with early pregnancy and gynaecological problems.
Clare Jordan, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist explained “Due to its capabilities, mobility and simplicity for the end user, the machine can be used by all colleagues within Gynaecology. It can be used in accident and emergency, gynaecology assessment room, theatres and if a one stop premenstrual bleeding clinic was set up it could be used to support the clinic without the need for scan requests through to radiology.”
Clare added “I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity for supporting us with the purchase of the scan machine. This is an exciting opportunity to enhance the care we provide to patients. For the first time, we are able to carry out 3D internal ultrasound scans, a significant step forward in helping us assess certain gynaecological conditions.
“Thank you again for helping us develop our service with this advanced technology, we are already seeing the positive impact it is making for our patients.”
