Relational counselling diploma
12 JUNE 2025

Clare Connor, Gastro-Intestinal Clinical Nurse Specialist has completed a three-year advanced diploma in relational counselling thanks to funding from York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity.
Clare explained “By completing this course, which is accredited by UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy), I have developed skills to provide enhanced psychological support to my patients and families at various points in their cancer journey.
“When patients are given bad news in the nurse-led clinic this can often come as a shock to them. I sit with them to try and help them process the news so that when they leave the clinic room, they feel supported and not overwhelmed.
“I provide ongoing support whilst they are having treatment to help them manage their worries, concerns and fears. I feel the skills I have developed are especially valuable for patients who are given a palliative diagnosis.
“One of the aims of the colorectal specialist nursing team is to provide a local support group for our patients and their carers. When the group gets started, I will be able to work with the patients and possibly develop peer support. I also plan share the knowledge I have gained by doing the course with my team and think about how we might start to meet some more of our patients’ needs.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity to help patients understand their psychological journey and manage their expectations.”
