Local supporters step up for breast cancer patients with 100 Miles in October Challenge
9 OCTOBER 2026

York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity is encouraging people across the region to get active this October and raise funds to support local breast cancer patients through its new 100 Miles in October Challenge.
Around 650 people have been diagnosed with breast cancer through York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust during the last 12 months, demonstrating the importance of ongoing support for patients and their families.
The charity's new 100 Miles in October Challenge invites people to walk, run, cycle, swim, or combine activities throughout October, aiming to complete 100 miles or a distance that feels meaningful and achievable for them.
One of those taking part is Ellie Brook, whose mum was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.
Ellie said:
"My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, so taking part in the 100 Miles in October Challenge felt like a positive way to show my support and do something meaningful while she continues her journey.
The breast cancer team have been absolutely amazing and have made this process easier to navigate, providing my mum with so much reassurance. Every mile I complete is for her and for everyone affected by breast cancer. Knowing that the money raised will help improve support for local patients makes this challenge even more special to me."
Funds raised through the challenge will support enhancements to patient experience for those with breast cancer. Every £15 raised could fund a specialist mastectomy bra, while £76 could help provide a wig for someone experiencing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment.
The challenge is open to everyone, with participants encouraged to complete 100 miles or set a distance that works for them. By taking part, supporters can get active, raise funds and make a positive difference for local breast cancer patients and their families.
