Families across York have helped achieve a fundraising milestone to help support premature babies and their families.

York Register Office has announced contributions from new parents have raised over £50,000 to help fund specialist training and additional equipment for York Hospital’s Neonatal Unit, previously known as the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

Since 2012, parents registering the birth of their child have been invited to add a voluntary £2 donation. This simple act of generosity over 13 years has collectively made a huge impact, with the latest contribution of £3,600 bringing the total raised to £50,100.

Every year, around 375 premature babies begin their lives on the Neonatal Unit at York Hospital. The unit, run by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, provides care and support for families across York and Scarborough.

York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity recently launched their new ‘Tiny Lives Appeal’ which aims to raise £100,000 for the Neonatal Unit.

Funds raised will provide additional equipment and furnishings as part of a £2 million refurbishment of the Neonatal Unit - creating a state-of-the-art space for babies and better facilities for families during what can be an incredibly difficult and emotional time.

The Tiny Lives Appeal will help fund items that make the environment calmer, more comfortable, and family friendly. The latest contribution from York Register Office has set the appeal off to a fantastic start.

Registration and Bereavement Services Manager Katie Page, from York Register Office, said: "Through the generosity of new parents, we have been able to support SCBU. These donations go a long way towards making a difference in the lives of babies and parents alike. We feel privileged to be able to help fund initiatives that bring comfort and connection to our community.”

Fundraising Manager Emma Sargent expressed her gratitude.

She said: “York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity is incredibly thankful to York Register Office and to the many parents who have chosen to support the Neonatal Unit in this way. Their generosity has made a real difference to the lives of babies and families, helping us to create a more supportive and comforting environment in the unit. Reaching £50,000 is a fantastic milestone, and we are so grateful for this ongoing commitment.”
