Families with children receiving care at York Hospital now have a dedicated space to rest and recharge, following the official opening this week of a newly refurbished parents’ room.

The revitalised facility provides a calm, welcoming environment for parents during what can often be an incredibly difficult and emotional time. Designed to offer privacy, comfort, and a moment of respite, the room allows families to step briefly away from the ward while staying close to their child.

This much-needed transformation has been made possible thanks to the generosity of donors including St Peter’s School 8–13, whose fundraising efforts resulted in a £4,308 contribution toward the refurbishment costs. Pupils from the school also created beautiful artwork that now decorates the room, bringing warmth, colour, and positivity to the space.

During the opening event, the school children met Evan and his mum Louise, who has been using the room during the last three weeks, while her son receives care on the ward. Louise shared her appreciation with the pupils. She said: “It is a perfect spot to come for respite, to have a little bit of time away from sitting by Evan’s bedside. It’s accessible all the time, comfortable, and is just lovely.”

Head of St Peter’s School 8-13 Phil Hardy also reflected on the project.  He said: “We are incredibly proud to have supported the refurbishment of the Children’s Ward parents’ room. Being invited to the opening was a real honour, and it was wonderful for our pupils to meet staff and patients and see first-hand the difference this newly refurbished space will make. It’s a privilege for our school community to play a small part in helping families feel more comfortable and supported during such important moments.” The students then enjoyed a question-and-answer session with Louise, giving them the opportunity to learn more about Evan and to understand how meaningful the space has become for families like theirs.

Ward Manager on the Children’s Ward, Helen Lamb, expressed her gratitude.

Reflecting on the support, she said: “Having a dedicated parents’ room makes a huge difference to families during their child’s hospital stay. We are so thankful to St Peter’s School 8–13 for their incredible support and creativity in making this space truly special.”

The new parents’ room forms part of York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity’s ongoing commitment to enhancing patient and family experience across all hospital and community settings served by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
